The 2022 GCSM Outstanding Leadership Recipient

Dr. Michelle Mikes

Serving in her 17th year as the K-12 Mathematics Supervisor for the Cobb County School District, Dr. Mikes strives in promoting a balanced mathematics classroom where students develop conceptual understanding of mathematics concepts, proceed with procedural fluency, and determine how and when to apply what they have learned. Previously having taught middle and high school mathematics for 12 years, Dr. Mikes understands the impact of continuous formative assessment and immediate feedback for student perseverance. This impact resulted in her encouragement and support for teachers to experiment with 360 Math Classrooms where students’ work is visible to all. The collaboration of fellow mathematics leaders has resulted in a large network developing effective practices in improving the traditional mathematics classroom.

Dr. Mikes has served as GCSM President, Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics Secretary, NCTM Liaison, and currently as the 2022 Georgia Mathematics Conference Program Chair. She has presented at national and state conferences, including serving on several mathematics advisory boards. A previous recipient of GCTM’s John Neff Award recognized as an inspirer, mentor, and advocate of mathematics education, Dr. Mikes continues to influence effective mathematics practices through teaching the Elementary Mathematics Endorsement and facilitating a Teacher Leader Academy in promoting equitable mathematics instruction for all students.
