"Leading for Student Agency in Mathematics"

DESCRIPTIONStudents’ mathematics agency is about action. It is about student choice and ownership of mathematics, engagement, thinking, and reasoning. It begins with productive beliefs about and knowing that they are capable. Yet with the best intentions, student agency can be undermined and even sabotaged. This session unpacks how this happens and the actions that leaders can take to help shift mathematics instruction from a teacher-centered approach to a student-centered approach. Leadership resources will be shared.

"The Magic of Mathematics: The Intersection of Skills and Attitudes"

Description: Students’ attitudes and dispositions about mathematics impact their performance in our math classrooms. How do we help teachers identify and embrace instructional strategies that both deepen students’ understanding of mathematics and nurture confidence, curiosity, risk-taking, perseverance, and belonging? In this session, we explore the intersection of the teaching of math skills and the nurturing of positive attitudes to bring magic to our math classrooms! We explore ways to foster positive attitudes through a variety of teaching decisions. A wealth of resources will be shared to bring back to schools and districts.
